As a proud alumnus of this school (Class of 1992), it is both an honor and a privilege to welcome you to another exciting year of learning, growth, and opportunity. Our school is built on a foundation of strong community support, and we are thrilled to have you as part of our Warrior family. At the heart of everything we do is The Warrior Way: Be Respectful. Be Responsible. Be Ready. These guiding principles shape our culture and help us create a school environment where everyone can thrive. Our mission is simple yet powerful: We equip students to change their world. Whether you're stepping into middle school or preparing for graduation, every day is a chance to grow into a productive, independent thinker who is ready to make a difference. We offer a wide range of opportunities to get involved and discover your passions—intramural sports, high school athletics, band, choir, orchestra, drama club, archery club, step team, eSports, middle school cheerleading, student government, and so much more. There’s something here for everyone, and we encourage you to take part. Our dedicated staff is made up of highly committed educators whose top priorities are to educate, build meaningful relationships, and make a lasting impact. To get the most out of your education, it’s essential that you come to school regularly, prepared to learn, and ready to engage in critical thinking. My goal is to ensure that every student feels safe, supported, and empowered to succeed. Together, let’s make this a year of growth, discovery, and Warrior pride. Let’s make it a great year! Absences and Extracurricular Activities A student absent from school is NOT permitted to participate in any school-related activity that may be taking place that day or evening. This may include, but is not limited to athletics, band, choir, drama, clubs, SGA events, class projects, dances, etc. This does not include absences for excused school
5 functions (ex. field trips, band/choral performances, AP testing, etc.). If a student is absent on a Friday, they are not allowed to participate in school activities on the weekend of the absence. The makeup procedure for short-term absence will require the following: • Homework assignments may be requested by speaking individually to each teacher. to each teacher immediately upon returning to the classroom. • Go into your Google Classroom (GC) and review any missed work. Teachers are responsible for providing make-up work for students who are absent. • Students will be given the number of days equal to the number of days absent to turn in complete make-up work. Long-term Absence (six days or more) The make-up procedure for long-term absence will require the following: • The student should enter Google Classroom (GC) to complete the necessary work. • Via GC, teachers are responsible for providing make-up work for students who are absent. • A reasonable timeline for the completion of the work will be established. What is Truancy? - Missing school has an impact on achievement in school! From the Wicomico County Code of Conduct – “A student is ‘truant’ if she or he is unlawfully absent from school for more than 8 days in any quarter, 15 days in any semester, or 20 days in a school year (Approximately 10%).” • Truant students are subject to disciplinary measures as per the policies of the Wicomico County Public School system. Unless students have a legitimate reason for their absence, students are expected to be in school every day. • A student who has had 5 or more unexcused absences in a marking term will need to successfully complete an Attendance Intervention Plan, or they will fail all courses for that marking term.
6 Lateness/Tardiness Tardiness is in two (2) categories- lateness to class and lateness to school. A student arriving late at school must report to the office for a late slip to enter class. Recurring unexcused lateness to school or class will be addressed by the school administrator. Our present policy on lateness to school is as follows (quarterly basis): 1) First lateness- Verbal warning 2) Second lateness- Verbal Warning and call to parent 3) Third lateness- Detention 4) Fourth lateness-Conference with student. 5) Fifth lateness- Administrative call to parents. 6) Sixth lateness- 30 minutes after school detention 7) Seventh lateness- 1 hour detention 8) Eighth lateness- ISI for day and loss of parking privilege 9) Ninth lateness- Saturday school 10) Tenth lateness- Saturday school and further consequences Early Dismissal Students needing to leave school early must bring a signed note from their parent/guardian (including the reason for the request & the desired time for dismissal) to the attendance office first thing in the morning. Time Between Classes There are FIVE MINUTES between classes, which is ample time to get to any location in the school. Students are to move as quickly as possible from one class to the next without running or making excessive noise. Students are not to loiter in the halls, outside, or in the lavatories between classes. Personal and School Items Cell Phones/Electronic Devices During the Day at Mardela Cell phone/personal electronic devices: • Must be in silent mode. • Must be turned off in private areas of the building (locker rooms, restrooms, nurse’s office). • Per the State of Maryland Law, audio and video recordings are not permitted at any time. Academic Dishonesty – “Cheating” HONOR PLEDGE: I have neither given nor received help on this assignment. Teachers need to be able to assess students to ensure that they will graduate College and Career Ready. When a student turns in work that is not his/her own, the process of monitoring students’ preparedness is undermined. At Mardela, cheating includes but is not limited to: • Copying or paraphrasing all or part of someone else’s work • Allowing others to copy or paraphrase your work. • Working together without teacher approval. • Using unauthorized electronic devices during an assessment. • Copying from the Internet or other sources without crediting the source. • Attempting to communicate or receive information during an assessment. • Looking at someone else’s test, quiz or exam while testing. • Asking or paying someone to complete work for you. • Giving or selling work to someone to submit as their own work. • Cheat sheets on paper, your person, etc.

Teachers will assess emergency situations that fall within this timeframe. Cafeteria Etiquette During each lunch shift, students are expected to be in the cafeteria. Expectations for lunch shifts and in the cafeteria include: • Report directly to the cafeteria for lunch and return directly to class at the end of your lunch shift. • Students may not leave the cafeteria without permission from a staff member. • Beverages must be in their original, unopened packaging. • Food deliveries from an outside vendor are not permitted. • Students may not leave campus to go to lunch. • Please wait your turn in line. • Once seated, students are to remain seated and not go from table to table. • Leave your table area clean and trash-free. • Food and drink are restricted to the cafeteria only, not hallways. • Arrive at the cafeteria on time.
