BOX 1538 2424 NORTHGATE DRIVE., SUITE 3, SALISBURY, MD 21801 Procedure SFS-GEN-PR-029 C. “In-school Suspension” – the removal within the school building of a student from the student’s current education program for up to but not more than 10 school days in a school year for disciplinary reasons by the school D. “Long-term Suspension” – the removal of a student from school for a time period between 4 and 10 school days for disciplinary reasons by the principal E. “Principal” – the principal of a school or the principal’s designee F. “Short-term Suspension” – the removal of a student from school for up to but not more than 3 school days for disciplinary reasons by the principal G. “Suspension” – the application of extended suspension, in-school suspension, short-term suspension, or long-term suspension III. Policy A. Suspension and Expulsion 1. No assignment of disciplinary action including but not limited to suspension or expulsion will take place until after due process has been fully afforded to the student. 2. Before any disciplinary action including but not limited to in-school suspension and out of school suspension is determined, the student shall receive oral or written notice of the allegations against him or her. The school administrator will provide the student with an opportunity to respond to the allegations, verbally or in writing and to present his/her version of events as well as an opportunity to present evidence in his/her defense, including the right to have a reasonable number of witnesses interviewed by the school administrator. 3. In-school Suspension a. In-school suspensions may be used at the discretion of the principal. b. After 10 days of cumulative in-school suspension, the student, the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s) and the principal shall confer. c. In-school suspension assignments do not impact involvement in extra-curricular activities. d. A student may not receive an in-school suspension unless the student has been informed of the reasons for the suspension and has been given an opportunity to respond before the suspension becomes effective. e. The school principal will provide the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s) with written notification of the in-school suspension action taken by the school. Parent(s)/guardian(s) can request to discuss the consequences and prior interventions and supports with the administrator and/or to review the student's written conduct history. f. The school will make provision for the student’s education during the period of in-school suspension.
