Kindergarten is a balance between the academic skills of the Maryland College and Career 86 Ready Standards and the development of social and physical domains. Students are 87 assessed in the following areas: reading, writing, language, mathematical thinking, the 88 arts, social studies, scientific thinking, physical development and personal and social 89 foundations. A child’s progress towards attainment of the identified standards and skills is 90 assessed through ongoing teacher observation and records kept at regular intervals. These 91 records may include anecdotal notations, diagnostic evaluations, checklists of skills and 92 concepts as well as student work samples. Instructional approaches used are research 93 based and include the active participation of students in whole group, small group, and 94 one-on-one activities. The skills and concepts that students are expected to master are 95 practiced, assessed, remediated, and reassessed until mastered. 96 2. A minimum of one student work sample is to be collected for each six-day cycle in the 97 marking term. Given the integrated nature of the kindergarten curricula, a single work 98 sample may reflect student progress on a variety of content standards. The ongoing 99 observational notes and records are to be kept in a student portfolio in order to determine 100 mastery of skills and concepts taught during the four marking terms. 101 3. Kindergarten students are assigned ratings for each learning domain (subject area) to serve 102 as a summary of the child’s knowledge and accompanying skills for that domain. Mid- 103 term progress reports are issued four times a year and report cards are issued according to 104 the approved calendar. 105 106 107 108 109 110
