Academic Excellence 255 Students in grades 1- 5 completing the year with all grades of A, O and S in all content 256 areas and special areas will receive an award of Academic Excellence. Academic Achievement 260 Students in grades 1-5 completing the year with grades of A, B, O and S in all content 261 and special areas will receive an award of Academic Achievement. Subject and special 262 areas include: reading, math, language, science, social studies, physical education, media, 263 music and art. 264 B. Retention/Non-Promotion 265 Prior to considering a student for non-promotion, appropriate instruction, placement, and 266 intervention must be provided to address individual student learning needs. A student in 267 grades 1-5 may be considered for non-promotion if: 268 1. The student is failing with a letter grade of an E in grades 1 through 5, in two or more of 269 the following subjects: mathematics, reading, social studies, science, language, and 270 writing. 271 2. The student's excessive absences place the student's academic performance "at 272 risk.” Specific information regarding guidelines for student attendance can be found in 273 the WCBOE Student Attendance Policy, SFS-GEN-PL-019 and the WCPS Student 274 Attendance Procedure, SFS-GEN-PR-002. 275 3. The school administration has followed the Wicomico County Public Schools 276 Retention/Non-Promotion of Elementary Students Procedures and submitted all required 277 documentation to the Director of Elementary Education by the last business day in June. 278 a. Prior to considering a student for non-promotion due to reading instructional level, the 279 student must be enrolled in an appropriate approved reading intervention program 280 designed to target identified deficiencies as denoted through documented assessments 281 for a period determined by the intervention program. 282 b. Student progress must be reviewed by the Student Services Team (SST) where the 283 student's designated case manager maintains a documented case management log 284 reflecting intervention services provided to the student to date. 285 c. Teachers must contact the parent/guardian of any student who is "at risk" for non- 286 promotion. Every attempt to have a face-to-face parent/teacher/principal conference 287
