As the parent/guardian works through the appeal process at each 367 level, if the designee upholds the principal's decision, then the parent/guardian may appeal 368 to the next level within ten business days. If the Superintendent of Schools upholds the 369 decision of the school principal to place rather than promote the student, the parent has the 370 right to appeal within ten days to the Wicomico County Board of Education by submitting 371 a letter in writing to the board president (Level V). The school team must be prepared to 372 present additional placement documents, beyond the required retention/non-promotion 373 packet including current student assessment information, documented intervention 374 services rendered, and/or attendance data denoting the need for a student to be placed in 375 the next grade for the next school year if requested by the Director of Elementary 376 Education, the Chief Academic Officer, the Superintendent of Schools, or the Wicomico 377 County Board of Education. Each level of the appeal process will generate a formal letter 378 stating the rendered decision to the parent and copied to the school team and the student's 379 cumulative record. 380 D. Promotion 381 1. A student is promoted from one grade level to the next upon successful completion of 382 each grade as determined by the classroom teacher and the school principal based on the 383 student's academic performance and attendance throughout the school year. 384 2. The fourth marking term report card will denote the student's status of "Promotion" and 385 will signify the next grade the student will attend. For example, "Promoted – Grade 3" 386 will appear on a successful Grade 2 student's end of the year, fourth marking term report 387 card. 388 389 VI. Middle School grades 6-8 390 A. Grading 391 1. Expectations of the class, which include grading practices approved by the school 392 principal, should be made clear at the beginning of the year to both students and 393 parents/guardians. During the first week of class each classroom teacher will provide, 394 review, and send home with each student a written handout that contains this information 395 for that course. Parents/Guardians of students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will be able to view 396 their child's grades on-line beginning mid-September through June 30th. The school office 397 will provide parents with access directions to the electronic portal. The electronic grading 398 portal is web-based, and allows teachers, students, parents/guardians, and administrators 399 to have access to the online electronic grading portal from anywhere internet access is 400 available. 401 2. Formative assignments, or assignments that are embedded as a part of daily instruction, 402 account for 50% of a student’s grade. Examples of formative assignments include class 403 work, homework, cooperative activities, exploratory labs, exit tickets, informal writing 404 assignments, and other formative assignments determined by the teacher. Summative 405 assignments account for 50% of a student’s grade. A summative assignment occurs after 406
